Train fare increased by 43%

Train passengers travelling to London from Stansted have been hit with fare rises of up to 43%, the Observer reports. The hike was introduced last week by rail operator National Express East Anglia as part of a raft of measures it says better reflects demand from users of its Stansted Express service.
Before the price rise, a day return ticket to Liverpool Street Station from the airport cost £22.30 and included an off-peak travelcard. However, the journey now costs £26 and no longer includes a travelcard, which must be bought separately at the airport or in London. Depending upon the time of day, the combined cost can now be as high as £31.90 - an increase of £9.60 or 43%.
Uttlesford MP Sir Alan Haselhurst told the newspaper that he will investigate the issue further. He said: ‘This is a sizeable increase and it seems illogical because the same deal is still available at stations other than Stansted Airport. I worry that this is an attempt to freeze non-airport passengers out of the railway station there.’
