MPs back call for 50 year ban on second runway
29.07.10
Campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion’s (SSE) bid to block a second runway for 50 years has been backed by local MPs, the Mercury reports. At a recent reception at the House of Commons organised by Uttlesford MP Sir Alan Haselhurst, a number of Conservative MPs signed a petition lobbying the coalition Government for a 50 year moratorium on any new runway.
Sir Alan was joined by North Herts' Oliver Heald and Harlow’s Robert Halfon, who unseated Labour’s Bill Rammell at the General Election in signing the petition. Government whip and Braintree MP Brooks Newmark also expressed his support.
Hertford & Stortford MP, Mark Prisk, could not add his signature because, as a business minister and member of the Government, he cannot lobby himself ! However he said: ‘I will do my best on the other side of the wire.’
