Council backs anti-expansion campaign
29.07.08
Thousands of locals would be at ‘significant’ risk of having idyllic lifestyles shattered if plans to build a second runway at Stansted are given the go-ahead. Babergh District Council warned that the local environment and the quality of life for its residents would be at risk if the controversial expansion plans are approved.
A report to be discussed by councillors this week sets out the concerns and recommends lodging a formal objection to the proposals that would allow the airport to almost treble passenger movements at the Essex hub, to become as big as Heathrow is today.
Anti-expansion campaigners have welcomed the council's opposition to the plans, adding that there would be an enormous impact on the entire county if the second runway was approved, in addition to a massive increase in environmental damage.
Plans for the second runway have already met with opposition from Suffolk County Council, Braintree District Council and Mid Suffolk District Council. Babergh's strategy committee will discuss the plans on Thursday.
