Stansted trials facial recognition gates
28.01.10
Stansted has rolled out the trial of its new facial recognition security gates. Passengers with biometric e-passports travelling (or returning) to the UK via Stansted can use the 'Autogates' being trialled in the arrivals area, which scan their face and check their passport photo in seconds – helping to save time waiting in what is normally a very long queue.
The Autogates use a page scanner to validate e-passports with an electronic chip and compare these to a live image of the passenger standing at the gate using biometric technology by measuring specific facial points – regardless of changes due to weight or facial hair, for example. If there is a match and the passenger clears security, with the automatic gates open allowing them across the border.
After the trial, assuming it is successful, the Border Agency is planning to roll-out Autogate systems to 10 other UK airports as part of the new £1.2 billion e-Borders system. They claim that this will cut wait times whist also allowing them to target terrorist suspects, known criminals and would-be illegal immigrants.
