Government plans 'airports bill'
26.05.10
A new economic regulation bill for UK airports was announced in yesterday's Queen's Speech. No details about the bill's contents were given during the speech, which merely referred to a bill to ‘reform the economic regulation of airports to benefit passengers’.
The new Government is keen to promote competition among airport operators, and has already ruled out expansion in the South East by blocking runway plans at Heathrow and Stansted. The new bill will reduce the level of regulation airports face and could see price caps in place at some larger airports scrapped, allowing the airport operators to set their own charges for airlines.
Press speculation suggests that the bill could also lead to the break-up of BAA - the UK's largest airports operator. It sucessfully appealed a ruling by the Competition Commission last year that it must sell Stansted and either Glasgow or Edinbugh airports.
