Runway planning application withdrawn
24.05.10
Stansted Airport has withdrawn its application to build a second runway. The move follows early pledges from the coalition Government to block airport expansion in the South East. David Johnston, the airport's managing director, said: ‘We reflected carefully on the new Government's clear intention to change UK airports policy and have moved quickly to withdraw this application.'
‘Stansted Airport is a key driver of growth in this part of England, and we will continue to work to bring new business here and to work with our neighbours, and the wider community, to provide jobs and strong business and travel opportunities in the months and years ahead. We continue to believe that additional airport capacity is needed in the South East to strengthen the UK's international trading links.’
We have always struggled to understand why Stansted Airport would need a second runway - other than to increase its value in a potential sale. It has planning permission already to allow it to grow to literally double its passenger numbers, which it could do with its current single runway. Given its recent passenger falls, a second runway would not be needed at the airport any time in the foreseeable future.
