Ryanair to lease strike planes to BA as O'Leary slams union
24.03.10
Ryanair has stated it is going to charter as much as four aircraft to British Airways during this weekend's strike by BA cabin crew. Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary said that BA CEO and fellow Irishman Willie Walsh thanked him personally yesterday for providing 3 Ryanair aircraft at Gatwick throughout last weekend's 3 day strike, and (Mr O'Leary) slammed the Unite union as ‘headbangers’, ‘dinosaurs’, ‘fat cats’ and ‘a bunch of dimwits’
Mr O'Leary stated he thought Mr Walsh was 'managing the strike extraordinarily well' and added that he was 'happy to help BA and its passengers' in what he said was 'an unwarranted and unjust' strike. He said it was vital to the future of BA that they win the strike and said the board of BA should 'stiffen their spine' and stand up to the strikers, adding that 'Willie is doing a good job'.
The Ryanair boss said the timing of the strike by BA flight attendants was 'spectacularly stupid'. He described the leaders of the Unite union as 'a bunch of out of control trade union headbangers.'
He said ‘It is insane that the cabin crew of BA, which is effectively a big pension deficit on wings, are striking at a time of global recession and when monumental losses are being reported at BA. It isn't often in my life that I've been entirely supportive of what Willie Walsh is doing, but he's absolutely right in this case.’
