Campaigners and airport clash on runway plans
21.01.10
Campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) has told Stansted Airport it ‘needs to wake up and smell the coffee’ and axe its plans for a second runway. SSE make the comment after the latest figures show the number of passengers at Stansted declined by 2.6 percent last month and by 10.7 percent in 2009. The airport responded by accusing SSE of being 'stuck on the same old point.'
SSE campaign director Carol Barbone said there is no commercial logic in proceeding with a second runway. She said: ‘Stansted needs to wake up and smell the coffee. It needs to acknowledge the reasons why Stansted has had such a dramatic fall in passengers during the difficult economic climate of the last two years, in stark contrast to Heathrow.’
However, a spokeswoman for the airport, said: ‘I don’t know about smelling the coffee, the adverse weather seems to have played havoc with the SSE messaging machine. It appears to be stuck in time and on the same old point.’ She said last year’s decline in passenger numbers was down to the global recession, and that the December figures were 'encouraging.'
