Stansted expansion decision delayed
19.07.08
The Government has delayed announcing its decision on whether Stansted can increase the number of flights it operates on its current single runway, allowing the airport to grow beyond the current limit of 25 million passengers a year.
A planning inquiry into expansion at the airport ended last October, and the Government was expected to announce a decision before last Christmas. But after a joint letter from transport secretary Ruth Kelly and communities secretary Hazel Blears, campaign organisation Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) is predicting a decision will not be taken until September at the earliest, almost 11 months after the public inquiry ended.
SSE Campaign director, Carol Barbone, said the latest excuse for delay was 'totally unbelievable'. She said: ‘It relates to a matter which could have been dealt with 6 months ago.’
