Ryanair to appeal Italian fine
19.05.10
Ryanair has said it will appeal against a fine of €3m euros (£2.5m) imposed by the Italian civil aviation authority ENAC after it failed to help passengers after cancelling their flights during the first volcanic ash crisis. ENAC said it knew of at least 178 cases of passengers who did not receive mandatory help, such as food and hotels, between April 17 - 22 at Rome's Ciampino Airport.
Ryanair has said that it has not received official notification of any fine and that it had not been told of any violations or given a chance to defend itself, which made the fine unlawful. The airline's spokesman, Stephen McNamara, said: ‘At a time when airlines across Europe cancelled thousands of flights and millions of passengers were disrupted, it is extraordinary that ENAC could investigate and then impose a €3m million fine only on Ryanair.'
