Stansted encourages passengers to use on airport parking
16.07.10
Travellers flying from Stansted this summer have been reminded of the importance of using the airport's official on site car parks. The airport has reminded anyone who might be tempted to use off site parking that its on-site car parks are the only ones that have been approved by Essex Police.
Julia Gregory, head of transport at the hub, said the on site car parks have accredited for their safety and security under the Park Mark scheme. She said: 'A recent report in Which? Car magazine drew attention to some of the pitfalls of using unofficial car parks.'
'Security measures in place in our on site car parks include CCTV, security fencing and regular patrols. We hope passengers will heed our advice, book early to get the cheapest rates, and leave their car in one of our Park Mark accredited car parks.'
More than 3 million cars are parked at Stansted every year, but it is consistently one of the most expensive airports in the UK to park at. We put this down to a lack of competition. Its local councils have blocked the development of off airport car parks, unlike at other airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick, which gives the airport a virtual monopoly.
This has seen the airport build more parking spaces (over 27,000) than any other UK airport and even than Atlanta Airport, the world’s busiest hub, even though it has less than a third of the US airport's passengers. Stansted also makes more from airport parking than from its retail operations. It also bans airport parking brokers from selling at less than its 'official' rates.
