Ryanair fined €3m for ash cloud passenger failings

The Italian aviation regulator has fined Ryanair €3m (£2.5m) for failing to help passengers after cancelling flights during the volcanic ash crisis. Italy's civil aviation authority ENAC said it knew of 178 cases of passengers who did not receive assistance as required by EU laws, including food or hotel accommodation, between April 17 and 22. A spokeswoman for Ryanair said the allegation was ‘complete rubbish’.
ENAC has accused Ryanair of failing to provide passengers at Rome's Ciampino Airport with drinks, foods and hotel accommodation as required by European law. It said that most other airlines had met their obligations despite the difficult circumstances.
An airline spokesman said: ‘Ryanair fully complies with EU Regulation 261 and has been complimented by the EU.' Having suffered a delay on a Ryanair flight from Ciampino, we are not sure that they have staff at the airport to help passengers. They certainly did not come forward !
