EU bans misleading flight ads
10.07.08
The European Parliament has banned airlines from advertising fares that do not include non optional taxes and charges. The new laws are expected to come into force across the EU by the end of the year.
There are rules already in some European countries - including the UK - that have led to the phasing out of adverts that appeared to offer the chance to fly for the cost of a newspaper.
The 35-member Association of European Airlines (AEA) welcomed the changes. A spokesman said: ‘I think it is a response to consumers getting fed up with the fact that what they pay does not always bear a great deal of resemblance to what they are offered. Airlines are happy that clarity has been restored and that the consumer is being given the correct information.'
easyJet said welcomes the changes, whilst Ryanair says it is 'transparent in its advertising.'
