Retail sales boom on weak pound
01.03.10
The weak pound saw sales at Heathrow and Stansted Airport jump to to their highest level for a decade in 2009, despite a fall in passenger numbers. The airports generated its highest level of income from retailing since duty-free for European travellers was abolished in 1999.
Although passenger numbers at both airports fell - at Stansted by a massive 11% - in 2009, the surge in sales has been driven by the falling value of sterling, which made goods at the airport comparatively cheap for foreigners passing through them. Increased security measures are also seeing passengers arrive at the airport earlier, increasing shopping and eating time.
