House on the Hill Museum Adventure

This is the largest private toy museum in the world, offering visitors a nostalgic trip back to childhood. The 80,000 exhibits include dolls and dolls' houses, puppet theatre, trains, action men display, and moving meccano.

Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village

Mountfitchet Castle and norman village of 1066 is believed to have originally been an early Iron Age fort and Roman, Saxon and Viking settlement. In 1066 the site was attacked by the Normans and Robert Gernon, the Duke of Boulogne, built his castle here, making it his chief seat and the head of his Barony.

The castle is the only remaining wooden motte and bailey castle in the world, and has many sites to see and is well worthy of a visit and a great day out for all the family.

Colchester Castle and Hollytrees

Colchester Castle is a Norman built castle which is now used to house artefacts from Colchester's long and colourful history as the former Roman capital of Britain. The museum presents a timeline of Britain from the Iron Age up until the Civil War. Also on the grounds of Colchester Castle is the Hollytrees museum - a free museum containing a variety of items, chronicling domestic lives of the past.

Chelmsford Museum

The Chelmsford museum covers a variety of topics, such as the domestic lives of people in history, the story of Chelmsford and natural history. It is also home to an art gallery, which contains portraits and glass and ceramic work local to the area.

Museum of Harlow

The Museum of Harlow tells the story of Harlow from pre-historic times until the present day. It does this by using artefacts from various eras in the town's history - it is possible to touch some of these, and even try on costumes!
